Lady Wolves Soccer Take Down Mount St. Mary

The Shawnee girls earned their first home victory of the season and first win that didn’t go down to penalty kicks with a 2-0 blanking of Mount St. Mary Thursday.

“Good win, at home in front of the crowd before the Spring Break,” coach Danny Kessner said. “Couldn’t be prouder. They’re playing hard... at least we’re going to finish non-district on a high-note.”

Charis Montgomery scored the first goal for the Lady Wolves early on in the match and it remained the only one for Shawnee in the first half. Grace Warren nearly had a goal toward the end of the half, but the ball found the post from the left side and Shawnee went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves returned after a performance from the Stompin’ Sensation dance crew and Braunya Lewis made a big save with 35:28 to go to keep Mount St. Mary scoreless.

Following a couple missed opportunities, Hope Young came up with Shawnee’s second goal of the game with 21:36 to play. Camille Columbus nearly got a goal off of a rebound from the top of the Mount St. Mary goal post and Shawnee escaped unscathed after a near goal from Mount St. Mary with eight minutes left.

Kessner switched things up a bit from previous games to have four defenders hanging back instead of his usual three. The results showed the ball up field more for the Lady Wolves than it has been in some other games.

“We kind of changed the formation up a little bit,” Kessner said. “We usually play with three in the back and we’re trying a little something with four in the back and trying to possess some more out of the back instead of trying to force it up top.”

The girls finish the first portion of their season with a record of 3-2 after winning their last two contests against Noble and Mount St. Mary. They will host Owasso upon their return March 27 for their first district game.
