Shawnee Nutrition Director Selected for National Training Opportunity
Isenhower 1 of Only 3 Directors from Oklahoma Chosen
Maria Isenhower, director of child nutrition for Shawnee Public Schools, was recently notified she is one of only three school nutrition directors from Oklahoma chosen to attend Produce Safety University, an in-depth training sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture. PSU will be held in Atlanta in April.
PSU is a one-week course designed to help school foodservice staff identify and manage food safety risks associated with fresh produce. The PSU course is designed to be a train-the-trainer immersion course, where participants are expected to conduct further training with the information they obtain. The curriculum covers all aspects of the fresh produce supply chain from growing and harvesting to storage and preparation through a combination of lecture, laboratory and field-trip instruction.
By completing this training, Isenhower and all Shawnee child nutrition staff will be better equipped to ensure food safety of produce, increase produce shelf life, control costs, and improve student acceptance of produce, Isenhower said.
Isenhower's attendance at PSU is covered at no cost to the SPS district, she said.
