Prevention Best Strategy When Combating Illnesses
A Message from Dr. April Grace, Superintendent
During this time of year when we are concerned about the spread of flu, strep throat and other illnesses, I wanted to let you know what we are doing at your child’s school to help keep all our students healthy and ask for your help in doing the same.
We know that the best strategy for staying healthy is preventing illness. Our prevention efforts include daily cleaning, with special attention given to high-touch areas like door handles, at all our school sites. We also discourage our staff from coming to work if they have cold or flu-like symptoms.
Here is where you can help us keep all our students and staff healthy. Review effective hand washing techniques with your children at home, and remind them to keep unwashed hands out of their mouths and eyes. If your child shows any symptoms of illness, especially a fever, please keep your child at home. Help your child avoid close contact with people who are sick. Teach your child to cough or sneeze into a tissue, and then throw the tissue away. All of these efforts can help us stave off the spread of contagious illnesses at our schools.
We know there is also growing international concern about the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). While there are no cases confirmed in Oklahoma at this time, be aware that we at Shawnee Public Schools are communicating with the Pottawatomie County Health Department to ensure we are following all appropriate protocols so that we may help prevent the spread of disease. More information about COVID-19 - including information on how to talk to your children about the disease - may be found on the Nurse's Corner page of our district website, www.shawnee.k12.ok.us.
The health and safety of our students are always our top priorities at Shawnee Public Schools. Thank you for helping us keep these children healthy. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
