Shawnee Public Schools Suspending Classes and Activities Beginning March 13, 2020
Shawnee Public Schools Families,
As the largest district in the county, Shawnee Public Schools plays a critical role in providing stability and safety for our community.
Shawnee has been closely monitoring the health and attendance of our students and staff. It is important to note that there are currently no confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Shawnee Public Schools.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends social distancing as a way to prevent community spread of the COVID-19 virus. With this in mind, Shawnee Public Schools feels it is in the best interest of our students, families, staff and the public to suspend classes and district hosted activities for tomorrow - Friday, March 13, 2020. As we move into Spring Break, this closure will allow our teams to begin a complete deep cleaning of all buses and school buildings.
Our current plan is for students to return to classes on Monday, March 23, 2020. In the event that school should be suspended after Spring Break, we have sent packets of work home with each student in an effort to continue instruction, regardless of extenuating circumstances.
Beginning tomorrow, Friday, March 13, through Sunday, March 22, 2020, all practices, trips, and district activities and events are suspended for Shawnee Public Schools. For additional clarification, during this time (which also includes Spring Break), no mandatory or non-mandatory activities sponsored by a school, organization, and/or program in association with SPS will occur within or outside of our schools and facilities.
Shawnee Public Schools will continue to update our website, www.shawnee.k12.ok.us, and communicate with parents through SOCS and the Shawnee Public Schools app. However, we encourage our families and staff to rely on reputable sources for information, like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) and the Pottawatomie County Health Department (PCHD).
