Beware of Live-Stream Sports Scams on Social Media
Shawnee Public Schools fans are cautioned to watch out for fake live-streaming sites that appear to be affiliated with our schools on social media, particularly Facebook.
These fake sites try to appear legitimate by tagging schools on social media and mentioning upcoming sporting events. These sites are part of phishing scams that try to access users' personal information. Shawnee Public Schools makes every effort to block and report these scam pages to Facebook, but our social media followers should be cautious. Follow these steps to make sure you are staying safe when viewing live streams of Shawnee athletics:
- Local businesses ShawneeCTV and KGFF Radio often cover Shawnee athletic events. These are legitimate businesses that are trusted community partners with Shawnee Public Schools.
- Shawnee Public Schools will share on its website and social media feeds any live-streaming information that has been approved by opposing teams for events away from Shawnee. If the post does not originate from Shawnee Public Schools, be cautious.
- If you are in doubt about the legitimacy of the live-stream of the athletic event, contact the SPS communication office at (405) 214-7121.
Live-streaming phishing scams are becoming prevalent on Facebook. If you see a site that you know to be a scam, please report it to Facebook.
