A Message from Dr. April Grace, December 16, 2021
Dear Shawnee Families,
We wanted to make you aware of a recent nationwide posting trend on TikTok stating that on Friday, Dec. 17, there is a challenge to call in bomb threats, school shooting threats or other similar safety threats at schools in the United States, even elementary. These posts did not originate from our area, and none of these threats were directed at any of our school sites.
We have been in contact with Shawnee PD regarding the trending posts. Together we are closely monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. Shawnee PD will continue to assess the situation through other sources they have throughout today and tomorrow, and, if necessary, they will have an increased presence around our buildings as an added precaution. Again, none of these threats originated locally nor were they directed at any of our school sites.
Social media is a powerful tool often used to influence others, and not always for the good. It is always important to remain vigilant when it involves these types of threats. Even if the social media threats are not credible, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. Please take time to talk to your students about the influence of social media and the potential consequences of engaging in this type of behavior. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member, law enforcement, or trusted adult right away.
As always, student and staff safety is our number-one priority. Thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students.
Respectfully,
April Grace, Ed.D.
Superintendent
