Bullying Prevention
What is bullying?
The CDC defines bullying as any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted individual. Any instance including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm should be taken very seriously. Common types of bullying include:
- Physical such as hitting, kicking, and tripping
- Verbal including name-calling and teasing
- Relational/social such as spreading rumors and leaving out of the group
- Damage to property of the victim
Bullying and conflict are not the same. A conflict is a disagreement without a power imbalance and is usually a single incident.
How can I help prevent bullying?
Unfortunately, bullying is an issue that some children face. In order to combat this issue, the Oklahoma State Department of Education has curated an extensive list of bullying prevention resources. Shawnee Middle School counselors also have a variety of resources related to bullying prevention. Shawnee Public Schools would like to encourage parents and guardians to talk with their student in regard to this serious issue.
How can I report bullying?
If you suspect that your student or someone you know has fallen victim to bullying, please speak to a school administrator or counselor. Anyone also can report an instance of bullying using the Bullying/Harassment Incident Report Form.
