Shawnee Public Schools is proud to announce the hiring of longtime coach and softball veteran Alex Flores as the district’s new head softball coach. A respected leader in the sport with decades of experience across both baseball and softball programs, Coach Flores brings with him a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and championship success.
“We are beyond excited to name a true softball legend, in Alex Flores, as our next head softball coach,” said Dax Leone, Shawnee Public Schools Athletic Director. “He has devoted his entire professional career to the game of softball and has truly made a huge impact on his players. Coach Flores has California roots but has spent the last few years helping Amber with the OKC Spark and Seminole State College. Our girls deserve the absolute best, and we definitely got that in Coach Flores.”
Coach Flores began his coaching career in baseball, serving as an assistant at Calexico High School, helping lead the team to multiple IVL championships. He later became the head baseball coach at Calexico (2001–2003) and an assistant at Southwest High School (2004–2009). In 2010, he shifted his focus to softball, taking over the Calexico High School Softball Program. Under his leadership, the program achieved its first-ever IVL Championship in 2013, repeated in 2016, and capped off a historic season with a CIF Championship in 2016—another school first.
Most recently, Flores served as an assistant softball coach at Seminole State College, where the team won the Region 2 Championship and reached the NJCAA JUCO World Series Final Four, earning recognition as the Region 2 Coaching Staff of the Year. He also spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the OKC Spark, a professional softball organization, working alongside his daughter Amber Flores, the team’s head coach.
Amber, who also serves as the head softball coach at Seminole State College and starred as a four-year standout for Coach Patti Gasso at the University of Oklahoma, shared her thoughts on her father’s next chapter: “The game of softball has been in our family DNA for as long as I can remember. My dad is truly one of the best and most genuine people there is. The Shawnee softball program is going to be another big part of my dad’s journey. My playing career at OU, and my coaching career at Seminole State College is a direct reflection of our family values.”
Coach Flores is a 1972 graduate of Calexico High School and is respected for his mentorship and commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
With Alex Flores leading the charge, Shawnee’s softball program is poised to continue building a strong tradition and competitive culture. His leadership will provide student-athletes with elite instruction and an understanding of the game, bringing decades of experience and a heart for young athletes.
