Shawnee Public Schools proudly joined communities across the nation in honoring our military heroes during Veterans Day. Each school site hosted its own celebration to recognize and thank the veterans who have selflessly served our country. These events reflected the deep respect and gratitude felt throughout the district.
At Will Rogers Elementary, students and staff had the special honor of welcoming Retired Staff Sergeant Justin Bedwell as their guest speaker. A former U.S. Army combat medic who completed a tour in Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Bedwell shared powerful stories of service, bravery, and resilience. His visit left a lasting impact on both students and staff.
Across the district, choirs performed patriotic selections, students created celebratory signs and artwork, and campuses welcomed veterans from all branches of the military for assemblies, breakfasts, and tributes.
Shawnee Middle School welcomed Retired Army Staff Sergeant Douglas Warden as their keynote speaker. His message highlighted service, leadership, and the importance of community—a meaningful reminder for students about the values shared by those who serve.
Superintendent Dr. Jason James expressed his appreciation for the strong turnout and support, stating, “Our veterans are the backbone of our nation’s story. We are grateful to each one who took time to be with our students today, and we are proud of our schools for creating such meaningful opportunities for learning, reflection, and gratitude.”
Shawnee Public Schools extends heartfelt thanks to all veterans, students, staff, families, and community members, whose courage and sacrifice allow our schools and our nation to thrive.
