Shawnee Middle School 8th grader Isaiah Lightsey was recently given the opportunity to interview former NFL star and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin. The interview took place at the Oklahoma History Center as part of the Pioneer Library System’s Spark a Change speaker series.
Isaiah, who dreams of becoming a journalist and movie director, represented Shawnee Middle School with confidence during the interview, showcasing his natural talent and passion for storytelling. Isaiah is an active member of the SMS Gifted & Talented program, ASPIRE, GEAR UP, and the National Junior Honor Society.
Leland Melvin, who uniquely holds the distinction of being both an NFL wide receiver and a NASA astronaut, shared stories about perseverance, teamwork, and resilience. His journey, from the football field to space exploration, serves as an inspiring message.
Isaiah’s mother, Marissa Lightsey, expressed her pride in her son’s accomplishments: “To say we are proud is an understatement! As always, thank you to the teachers, mentors, and family that has helped this kid along the way!”
Shawnee Middle School Principal Keely Tolin reflected on the importance of experiences like this for students: “When we expose students to opportunities at a young age, we help prepare them to excel in life after graduation, whether they choose to enroll in higher education, enlist in the military, or go straight into the workforce. Experiences like Isaiah’s interview with Mr. Melvin give our students the confidence to pursue their dreams.”
Shawnee Middle School is proud of Isaiah for representing his school and community in such an exceptional way. His experience interviewing a national figure like Melvin will no doubt fuel his continued academic and personal growth.
