Jefferson Elementary School is now home to a beautiful new mural created by local Native artist, Nicholas Blanchard. On Friday, May 16, students, staff, and community members gathered for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the mural’s completion.

The mural, which features Thomas Jefferson alongside children playing and learning, captures the spirit of curiosity, imagination, and the joy that fills the halls of Jefferson Elementary each day. The artwork is not only a beautiful addition to the school but also a symbol of how public art can inspire connection and community spirit.

“This mural brings our walls to life,” said Principal Jennifer Epperley. “It reflects the energy and joy of learning that we see in our students every day.”

Funded through the recently passed school bond, the mural is part of Shawnee Public Schools’ continued investment in creating elevated learning environments for students across the district. It also highlights the district’s commitment to celebrating local culture and creativity through public art.

Community members are invited to stop by Jefferson Elementary to view the mural and take photos with the new artwork, perfect for celebrating Shawnee’s growing arts presence.

“We are excited to unveil our second mural by Nicholas on our campuses, and we look forward to more. He has taken our vision and made it a reality. Keep an eye out for the next one,” said Amanda Johnson, SPS Director of Communications.
