Shawnee Public Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Joseph Craven as Band Director and Desireé Whiteman as Assistant Band Director. Together, they will lead the Shawnee Public Schools band program, The Pride of the Pack, bringing a dynamic blend of experience, creativity, and enthusiasm to the Shawnee music community.

Joseph Craven, a graduate of Oklahoma City University, brings a strong background in education, performance, and composition. He began his teaching career at Putnam City North High School, where he served as Assistant Band Director from 2018 to 2021 and then as Head Director from 2021 to 2024. In addition to his work in education, Craven has performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic from 2015 to 2024 and is an active composer, writing original music for high school bands and percussion ensembles.

“I’m excited to join Shawnee Public Schools and eager to build meaningful connections with students and families while creating outstanding musical experiences,” said Joseph Craven. Outside of the band hall, Craven enjoys kayaking, hiking, astronomy, birding, and history.

Desireé Whiteman, originally from Fort Worth, Texas, is a woodwind specialist with expertise in classical flute and jazz saxophone. She studied Instrumental Music Education at Oklahoma State University and brings with her a decade of performing experience in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Most recently, Whiteman served as Assistant Director of Bands at Putnam City North High School from 2023 to 2025.

During her time there, she successfully developed the school’s jazz program from a volunteer-based ensemble into a competitive, class-based offering, while also coaching multiple chamber ensembles that earned superior ratings at state competitions. Whiteman is passionate about music education and is committed to fostering student growth, excellence, and a vibrant musical culture.

Shawnee Public Schools is thrilled to welcome Mr. Craven and Ms. Whiteman to the district. Their combined talents, dedication, and leadership will further elevate the tradition of excellence within the Shawnee band program. The district looks forward to an exciting year ahead for The Pride of the Pack.
