Shawnee Public Schools is proud to announce the implementation of a new Personal Electronic Device Policy, approved by the Shawnee Board of Education on June 30, 2025, designed to support student focus, engagement, and well-being during the school day.

The “Disconnect to Reconnect” initiative aligns with Senate Bill 139, which prohibits student use of personal electronic devices from the start of the instructional day until dismissal. Students are expected to keep devices powered off and stored during all instructional hours.

“When students put their devices away, they can show up for learning, for their classmates, and for themselves,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason James. “This is about building classrooms that provide an opportunity for true engagement with less distraction.”

The policy covers cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and similar devices. Students may still bring devices to school, but usage is only permitted before and after the instructional day. Families can always contact their child through the school office.

Full guidelines and expectations have been shared with families and are available on the SPS website. This initiative is one step toward a healthier, more connected learning environment for all students.
