Shawnee Public Schools joined thousands of schools across the country in celebrating National Walk to School Day, with more than 1,400 students, parents, and volunteers taking part in the day’s activities.
The morning began with walks held at each school site across the district. Families gathered at designated meeting points and walked together to their school, promoting community connection and healthy habits. Shawnee Public Schools extends a special thank-you to Pogo and the City of Shawnee for partnering with the district to ensure safe and successful walks for all participants.
Later in the morning, all 5th-grade students from Shawnee Public Schools were joined by 5th graders from Pleasant Grove and Grove School for a districtwide walk to KidSpace Park. The group utilized the newly completed sidewalks along Independence and Center streets to reach their destination for a morning of movement and outdoor fun.
Physical education teachers from across the district led students in a variety of active games before everyone enjoyed lunch and time to play at the park. In total, 320 fifth graders took part in the special event, which was made possible through strong community partnerships.
“Events like this show what can happen when our community comes together for kids,” said Michelle Wallace, Director of Counseling and Community Engagement. “We’re grateful to Pogo and the City of Shawnee for helping make walking to school a safe, fun, and healthy experience for our students.”
