Shawnee Public Schools is proud to announce that two of its outstanding educators have received national recognition for their leadership and impact in school libraries, highlighting the district’s commitment to literacy, innovation, and student learning.
Keely Tolin, Principal at Shawnee Middle School, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished School Administrator Award by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association.
The national award honors school administrators who demonstrate exceptional support for school library programs and student learning. Tolin was recognized for her commitment to fostering a learner-centered library environment and for ensuring the school library remains a central hub of instruction, collaboration, and innovation.
Under her leadership, Shawnee Middle School’s library has flourished as a dynamic space where students engage in research, creativity, and cross-curricular learning experiences.
In addition, Cherity Pennington, Director of Library and Media Services for Shawnee Public Schools, has been named a 2026 School Librarian of the Year Finalist by School Library Journal.
This prestigious national recognition honors librarians who demonstrate excellence in serving students, collaborating with educators, and advancing innovative library programming. Finalists are selected based on their impact on student engagement, integration of library services into curriculum, and leadership within their school communities.
Pennington, who also serves as the librarian at Shawnee Middle School, was specifically recognized in the “Collaborator” category, reflecting her strong partnerships with teachers and her role in enhancing learning opportunities for all students.
“Having both a campus leader and a district library leader recognized at the national level is a huge win for Shawnee Public Schools,” said Dr. Jason James, Superintendent of Shawnee Public Schools. “Ms. Tolin and Mrs. Pennington reflect what it means to put students first and to create meaningful, engaging learning environments.”
These honors reflect Shawnee Public Schools’ dedication to strong library programs and the vital role they play in student success. Through innovative leadership and collaboration, both educators continue to elevate opportunities for students across the district.
