Shawnee Public Schools is proud to announce the ribbon cutting celebrating major renovations at Sequoyah Elementary School made possible through the 2024 bond passage. Thanks to the support of Shawnee voters, SPS was able to reallocate 8 million dollars originally designated for a new elementary school to critical upgrades across the district’s four elementary campuses.

This summer, Sequoyah Elementary was the final elementary school to undergo extensive improvements designed to enhance safety, functionality, and learning environments for students and staff. The project builds on district-wide initiatives, which have already included renovations of Jefferson Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary, and Will Rogers Elementary, the installation of new intercom systems at all elementary sites, and the construction of a new safety vestibule at Shawnee Early Childhood Center.

Renovations at Sequoyah Elementary included a new parking lot, exterior awning and windows, as well as significant interior updates, including new flooring, renovated restrooms, and more.

To celebrate this community investment, SPS invites families, alumni, and community members to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony at Sequoyah Elementary. The ribbon cutting will begin at 4:00 PM on Monday, October 5th, followed by building tours where guests can see firsthand the improvements made possible by Shawnee’s commitment to its schools.

This event is presented in partnership with Shawnee Forward and serves as an opportunity to thank the citizens of Shawnee for their continued investment in the future of education in this community.

“Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to see firsthand the pride and commitment this community has for Shawnee Public Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason James. “The transformation at Sequoyah Elementary is a wonderful reflection of that investment in our students and in the places where they learn each day. We’re excited to celebrate this completed project with our Sequoyah students, staff and families, and to see this school community enjoy a space that is truly worthy of the students it serves.”
